Youve already worked with an impressive number of celebrities in show business. Is there anyone that you would like to work with whom you havent yet?Absolutely! Its difficult to narrow it down to one person, but if I had to choose somebody that I could work with tomorrow, I would choose President Barack Obama. 2. When did you discover that you wanted a career in the beauty industry?It was actually an evolutionary process that began when I was 18 years old. (My mom, however, will tell you it started in 4th grade when my teacher confiscated my comb during class.) For me, I remember the journey starting when my hairdresser asked me to be his hair model at the Midwest Beauty Show in Chicago. Throughout the day, I had an opportunity to walk around the convention and talk to people about their careers. On the drive home, I decided I wanted to use my creativity to make people feel good about themselves. I immediately enrolled in beauty school. 3. Do you think this is a skill that successful beauty professionals are born with or is it one that can to be cultivated and perfected?Ive seen both types of artists be very successful. Im not a natural born artist. I attended many classes on both hair and make-up even after graduating beauty school. Even now as an educator, I continue to take the time to hone my skills. 4. How can young men and women who are aspiring to work in the beauty industrybegin their journey?Knowledge and passion are the keys to success in this career. Only when you understand how the industry works, can you direct your passion and learn how to make it work for you. 5. When did you get your big break?I believe that luck is a combination of preparation and readiness. For three years, I went to the library every week researching movies, art, and fashion. The Internet didnt exist as it does today! And just when I was ready to throw in the towel, and move back to Chicago, I met a freelance artist named Marvin at my going away party. Because he was not one of the invited guests, I introduced myself, which led to a conversation about my dream. I explained my story and shared my dream of becoming a signed freelance hair and make-up artist with the Celestine Agency, to which he replied, I am an artist signed by the Celestine Agency. I was floored!! I have been an artist with the Celestine Agency for the last 10 years.6. What are some career goals that people should set for themselves before attempting a career in beauty? Commitment: A commitment to yourself to never give up on your dream. Knowledge is power: Know your craft, understand your industry, and network with everyone within your industry. Budget: You have to be prepared to invest in yourself and in your career. Location: You need to live in a city that can offer you the type of work youre looking to perform. (Freelance work is available in every major city) Thick Skin: Expect rejection. With every no, youre one step closer to the next yes! 7. What inspired you to write your book, Shortcuts? Over the last 10 years, the number one question Ive been asked is, How do I break into the industry? I wrote Shortcuts to encourage and educate aspiring artists on how to make their dreams come true. My goal was to create the first all inclusive resource guide for hair and make up artist on how to break into the fashion and entertainment industry. 8. Did you begin your career as a freelance makeup artist? Actually, I started my career as a hairstylist. After beauty school, I worked at a salon in Chicago. I enrolled in special FX make up school when I moved to Los Angeles. 9. What are some ways that Teen Vogue readers can land their first freelance job? A freelance artists portfolio is the key to landing your first job. A new artist builds their portfolio with pictures from their test shoots. On a test shoot the photographer, hairstylist, model, make-up artist, and stylist agree to donate their time in an effort to create new images for their portfolios. 10. What is the hardest part about working in beauty? Saying no to one of my favorite clients because I am already booked that day. 11. Do you have any goals set for yourself that you are yet to reach? Yes, I have ideas for several more hair and make-up books. Currently, Im designing a class thats focused on building artists portfolios; students will leave the class with photographs in hand. And my personal goal is to retire in Costa Rica.12. Are there different paths to take for those who are interested in beauty for fashion and television than those who would like to work on major Hollywood projects? Yes, the career path for film and television is completely different than a career in fashion. For starters, film and television artists are union and fashion artists are non-union artists. It all depends on which avenue of art you choose to pursue. This is why it is so important to understand all the different options available to you as an artist. Once you are a seasoned artist, these two industries will cross over for you. The opportunities at that point become endless. 13. What kind of projects do you have the most fun working on? My favorite projects are magazine editorial shoots. I love the art of photography. Capturing a moment that affects people and lasts forever is really something special. 14. How is beauty related to art? In its purest form, beauty and art are one in the same. 15. Is beauty school a necessary step to take toward a career in entertainment? It all depends on the career path within the entertainment industry that you choose to pursue. Although I highly encourage education, certain careers within the entertainment industry do not require a cosmetology license. 16. If you had not made the decision to become a makeup and hair stylist, what career do you think you would have pursued? A personal chef. I love to eat great food and I love to entertain. 17. Who has inspired you the most throughout your career in beauty? Hairstylist Orlando Pita. His art is diverse, sophisticated, and timeless.18. How can girls highlight their best features without going overboard? For everyday looks, less is always more. If your unsure of what to use or how to apply make up, visit the make-up counters. Talk to the make-up artists and when you meet one that you click with ask for their advice. They can help you determine which techniques and colors are best for your features. And the best part is, its free! 19. What are some of your favorite hair products/tools? Hands down my favorite hair tool is my boar bristle wooden round brush. The Devil Wears Prada - 2 Stars (Average)Meryl Streep, one of Hollywoods best and most honored actresses, carries The Devil Wears Prada like the namesake handbag we see early in this movie, which is about a powerful New York fashion magazine editor and her wannabe gofer.Streep, a graduate of Vassar and the Yale School of Drama, has 13 nominations for an Academy Award, more than any other actor. Streep has 10 nominations for Best Actress and 3 for Best Supporting Actress.She won Oscars for Kramer vs. Kramer (Best Supporting Actress) and for Sophies Choice (Best Actress).In The Devil Wears Prada, Miranda Priestly (Streep) is the editor of Runway fashion magazine (modeled after Vogue). She hires Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway), a recent journalism grad, to be her new gofer. Andy supposedly wants this opportunity to grovel for an iron-willed, focused Miranda who would intimidate her favorite pet if she had one.In her new job Andy does not write a memo much less a news story. She picks up Mirandas cleaning and coffee and fulfills other outrageous requests of the spoiled editor who believes she is the cats meow.The plot line involving Andy is specious in that no serious journalist would ever work for a Miranda Priestly in the role of a gofer. She would rather work for a weekly newspaper than the New York Times if she had to put with the crap that Andy had to put up with. This is especially true of anyone with talent who has integrity.It is possible to get ahead on talent alone without integrity but doing so over a period of time molds you into a lower life form.I know as I spent 20 years in the news business as a reporter, investigative reporter, sports editor and managing editor for a daily newspaper, and owner of a community publishing company.Miranda Priestly had such demands as Find me that piece of paper I had in my hand yesterday morning. Steep played her role very well.Andy supposedly has a metamorphosis from a naÃve, plain, simple girl into a trendy, elegant gofer, and manages to do so with the help of Nigel (Stanley Tucci), the magazines art director.In the end, she ditches the job when she realizes that life without her boyfriend, her friends and family are not worth the price of being exclusive. Her career move into the fashion world pushes people out of her life as her career demands suck time away from all her other relationships.She ends up getting a job offer as a journalist with the New York Mirror, a real newspaper that ceased publishing in 1898.I want to believe this film has a more serious message about commitments by young s, but Andy slinks back to her live-in boyfriend, who has secured a new position as a sous-chef in another city.
