A lot of people may not know this but Victorian corsets are basically the predecessors of todays modern corset. These corsets were made to help the woman achieve the kind of hourglass figure that was considered very appealing to men in those days. Since clothes no longer sported those huge sleeves that used to create the hourglass image that women wanted, something else had to be done. This was when corsets began to be used to cinch the waist in tightly, sometimes to very painful extremes, to aid in giving the woman wearing it the curves she wanted.Women became so obsessed with getting the perfect cinched in waist and the hourglass figure that a lot of them wore these Victorian corsets rather tightly. This then became the reason for certain ailments that women suffered in those days and these included indigestion and constipation. Although there were claims that women suffered from other more serious ailments in the past due to these corsets, these are not actually supported by scientific proof. The evolution of the corset from its early funnel form to this painful cinched waist form became such an issue later in the late 1800s that by the early 1900s, it was changed into what was then called the Edwardian corset which took pressure off of the abdominal area.Today, these Victorian corsets or antique corsets, as you might easily call them, are no longer in general usage although there are still a few women who love the rather extreme reductions in waistline that these give them. Most of the people who have these old fashioned corsets have them as part of a collection of old corsets and not as something they would wear to help cinch in their waists. Modern corsets follow the shape of the corsets that come from the late Victorian period but with a slight difference. These new corsets no longer force your waist to be cinched in too tightly in the painful way it did in the past.
